Consider taking a full output of the booting process of switch 2 whenever it tries to join the stack. V01 and V02 should be able to be bundled together, as long as IOS version and license level are active, if these were uncompatible, the secondary switch could end up on a bootloop instead of a standalone unit.

Have you checked if the stack cables you are using are connected with the corret orientation? Cisco Logo should be always pointing to the correct side which is upside. The solution was very simple, i had to unplug and plug again the stack cablesthe message i got was the following:. After that the two switches formed the stack. The mode sso command can be entered only from within redundancy configuration mode. Redundancy may not work due to differences between the Cisco IOS releases.

If you perform an online insertion and removal OIR of the module, the switch resets during the stateful switchover and the port states are restarted only if the module is in a transient state any state other than Ready. The forwarding information base FIB tables are cleared on a switchover.

I've powered up the new switch and copied the firmware from the master so the new member is running the same firmware as the rest of the group.

Current version is Following the documentation when upgrading to that version install activate on the master switch caused both switches to reload at the same time. Remember that all the switches in the stack must be running the same code version.

If it is a SMU Software Maintenance Upgradethen it may be possible to upgrade a module without restarting the stack, but you will probably have some downtime, depending on the specific upgrade. The series was designed so that separate modules of the code can be individually upgraded, but as far as I know, Cisco has not yet released any such upgrades. In any case, you should always anticipate needing to have some downtime when performing a software upgrade on a switch or switch stack including switches that support ISSUeven if it is only a few seconds.

You should only do such work during a network maintenance window. Cisco has many documents regarding upgrading software on the switch series if you simply search. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

How to add a switch to an existing Cisco C2960X stack without breaking everything

Network Engineering Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for network engineers. It only takes a minute to sign up. My question is : would that impact our configuration? The order in which the switches are physically connected does not matter to the configured switch number. The switches are connected in a loop, so there is really no top or bottom, even if there is a physical top and bottom in a rack. If you correctly configure the switches, you would have specifically set the switch numbers in the switch before building the stack, and adding a switch anywhere in the stack will not change the switch numbers, so the interface numbers will stay the same.

You should also specifically set the switch priorities, which do not need to relate to the switch numbers. For example, Switch 3 could be the master, and Switch 1 could have the next highest switch priority, becoming the master if Switch 3 goes down.

Alright, for future reference, I will then configure "switch 1 renumber 4" on my new switch before adding it to the stack. You set the switch priority using, for example: switch 1 priority 15 and then switch 2 priority 10 - switch 3 priority 8 etc.

Cown, one interesting thing we have run into is our Operations group deciding that no switch should be set to 15so we start with 14 and go down from there. I'm not sure of the reason for the decision, but it may be that they would want to put in a higher priority switch at a later time for some reason.

RonMaupin i guess that's a good idea. We've always used 15 and never had problems. Pretty straight forward to change a broken one too.

Email Required, but never shown.A Cisco CX stack can have up to 8 members, however there is only one master on the stack. Adding a switch to the stack without taking a few precautions can have disastrous consequences. First, all stack members must run the same Cisco IOS software image. The same means also the same feature-set. And finally, can we mix different C series? Yes all CX models are supported.

You can also mix CX and CS in the same stack but with some restrictions. See below. Otherwise, the switches will not stack. Here is how to do this:.

Excellent football tips

To avoid problems when you attach a new switch into a stack, you have to make sure the switch priority of the new switch is lower than the master, and, if needed, lower than the other members of the stack.

By default, a switch have a priority of 1. If you never set the priority of the existing switches on the stack, they also all have a priority of 1. This is not recommended. We can see the current master have a priority of 10, and the member have a priority of 1.

A new switch have a default stack member number of 1. When it joins a switch stack, its default stack member number changes to the lowest available member number in the stack. To add a new switch into an existing stack, the best is to specify the switch number before adding it to the stack. You can manually change the stack member number by using the command:. If you manually change the number of an existing stack member and no interface-level configuration is associated with that new member number, that stack member resets to its default configuration.

Once done, you can configure the interfaces before the switch is added to the stack.

To do this, enter the switch number and the switch model. For example:. When this feature is enabled without any value, the stack MAC address changes in 4 minutes the default. Or we can specify the time 7 minutes in the above example.

Add new Switch to Cisco Stack Switch

During this time, if the previous stack master rejoins the stack, the stack continues to use its MAC address as the stack MAC address, even if this switch is now a stack member and not the stack master. If the previous stack master does not rejoin the stack during this period, the switch stack takes the MAC address of the new stack master as the stack MAC address.

The member number is appended to the system prompt.
